Homemade Bacon Cheeseburger Hamburger Helper

Do you ever wonder what is in those “special seasonings” packets in Hamburger Helper?  What are all those weird sounding ingredients that are so hard to pronounce?  Now you don’t have to wonder what you are feeding your children with this recipe.  You can mix up the seasonings to better suit your taste buds.  I like to add cayenne to mine, but that is purely optional.

Homemade Bacon Cheeseburger Hamburger Helper Recipe

6 strips of bacon, cut into 1/2 pieces
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 lb. ground beef
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. flour
1 cup water
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp. white sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. oregano
3/4 tsp. parsley
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. chili powder
2 cups elbow noodles, uncooked
2 cups cheddar cheese
1 tbsp. cayenne powder (optional)

  • Cook bacon pieces in a large pot over medium heat.  When bacon starts to crisp, add onions and garlic.  Cook for a few minutes then add the ground beef.  Cook until beef is fully cooked.  Drain and set aside.
  • Melt the butter in the same pan and add flour.   Cook for 5 minutes over medium heat.  (This is a roux that will thicken the sauce)  Add the milk, water, and seasonings.  Stir until mixed.
  • Return the meat mixture to the pan and add the dry noodles.  Bring to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 9 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Remove from heat and stir in the cheese.
  • Top with more cheese if you like and enjoy!
